Finding Information about Copies
Although you do not need to know much about the Internet to connect
to your library's Athena collections, you do need to understand
a few basic concepts.
What is a URL?
URL is the acronym for Uniform Resource Locator. Think
of a URL as an address that you can use to refer to a specific
site on the Internet. Each site, including your library, has its
own unique URL.
What is a Web Browser
A Web browser is a software program that allows you to
access information on the Internet. You can access a specific
location, such as your library, by providing the browser with
the site's URL.
What Is a Remote User?
As far as this manual is concerned, remote users are any patrons
connected to your library via the Internet. Since remote users
are not physically in the library, they are considered to be connected
to it from a remote site. The remote site might be an office,
a home, or even a hotel on the other side of the world.
Contents
already know how to search with Webserver. Nevertheless, there
are some slight differences between the two programs.
Unlike Athena, Webserver is subject to technical restrictions
that are unique to the Internet. This means you will notice some
slight differences between Athena and Webserver. Fortunately,
these differences are superficial. The main concepts are the same
and, like Athena, Webserver's screens are very intuitive. You
will usually know what to do just by looking at the screen.
Here are the main differences between Athena and Webserver:
Buttons
As with Athena, you click on various buttons to tell Webserver
what you want done. You will notice that the buttons on Webserver
screens sometimes look quite different from those on Athena screens.
Buttons on Webserver's screens often appear two-dimensional and
their icons may be different. However, buttons are always labeled,
so you can quickly tell what a particular button does.
You will also notice that the buttons on Webserver screens are
sometimes found in different places than equivalent buttons on
Athena's screens.
Tabs
Unlike Athena, Webserver does not use tabs. Instead, you will
see buttons positioned near the top of the screen. These buttons
correspond to, and function like the tabs on Athena's screens.
As with tabs, each button is linked to a specific function. To
start a function, click its button.
Viewing Full Descriptions
Webserver places an icon (picture) to the left of each title in
the search results. These icons vary depending on the format of
the item. If the item is a book you will see a book icon, if the
item is a CD-ROM, you will see a CD-ROM icon, etc.
When you want to display a title's full description, click on
its icon. Unlike Athena, you cannot display a full description
by clicking on the text of a title.
Returning to the Search Results
After you display a title's full description, you may want to
return to the search results. The best way to do this is to click
your Web browser's BACK button.
Browsing Indexes
Webserver does not have a Browse Indexes feature.
SelectSearch
Webserver does not have a SelectSearch feature.
Printing
Although Webserver does not have a printing feature, your Web
browser probably does. Use it when you want to print a page of
search results, a full description, or a MARC description.
For more information about printing, refer to the documentation
that came with your Web browser.
