DID YOU KNOW: EXERPTS FROM IAM HISTORY

The first issue of the Machinists Journal dated, February, 1889, Goddess Athena is featured as the logo of the journal. To view this journal click on the attached web site. (http://www.library.gsu.edu/dlib/iam/getBrandedPDF.asp?issue_id=1&year=1889)

Why Goddess Athena? In 1888 a book was written by C. Osborne Ward titled The Ancient Lowly. In this groundbreaking research, Goddess Athena is noted as being the patron of workers in the ancient Greek society. Subsequent research identifies one of the mythical Greek gods as Hephaestus, the Greek god of metalworkers.
